Volunteer Accomplishment

The day I found my first Stolen Vehicle!!!

It was a Saturday morning in January 2008 when my fellow volunteers and I went out to do our regular foot patrol shift. I still remember that it was a very windy day, and in addition to my fellow patroller, we had a CAPP (a high school work experience student) student join us. I was given the responsibility of checking the license plates of parked cars, while the other 2 volunteers were responsible for noting down our direction.

We were walking south along 43rd Avenue and were ready to return to the office when we came upon an older model champagne colored Honda Accord. It was parked at the southeast corner of Inverness Street & 43rd Avenue. As usual, I ran the license plate into the PDA (a small handheld device that our volunteers use to scan possible stolen vehicles), which indicated that it matched the plate of a stolen vehicle. I double-checked it again on the PDA, and was given the same results.

I then called VPD non-emergency at 604-717-3321, and reported to the operator that we were from the South Vancouver Community Policing Centre, and may have found a stolen vehicle. I informed her of the location and the license plate, and she confirmed with me that it was a Champagne Honda Accord. She stated that she would send someone down as soon as possible, and asked if we were going to wait in the area, but assured us that we did not have to if we had other work to do. Taking into consideration the time and the cold weather, I told her that we were in fact on our way back to the office, and will not stay at the scene if it wasn't necessary. After confirming with the operator once again that she would send a police officer, my fellow foot patrollers and I returned to the office where we completed a report on our shift activities.
