Citizen's Police Academy
Citizen's Police Academy by
Vancouver Police Department
SVCPC volunteer, Daniel, had an excellent time at the Citizen's Police Academy last year. Here is his report.
=======================================
This fall, I had an opportunity to participate in the Citizen's Police Academy, which is a 5-week course taught by officers from the individual sections of the Vancouver Police Department. It is intended to educate normal citizens like you and I about the VPD, their mandate and the challenges they face on the job. Officers would bring in visual aids, such as actual drugs or policing equipment to give us a better picture of what they use and deal with. After taking this course, I really now feel a lot more open-minded in regards to policing. We all hear of the negativity surrounding the police and how things are done or how things don't get done from the media, but by hearing actual officers explain their work it really opens your eyes to both sides of the story. Not only does this course educate us, it even gave us an opportunity to go to a shooting range to fire guns, drive police cars at a driving course and attempt the Police Officers Physical Abilities Test, things averages citizens would most likely never be able to do. From this amazing class, the members of the class developed a better understanding Vancouver Police Department better and we all get to experience some of the things only police officers could face. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning more about the Vancouver Police Department because it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
